![]() ![]() With a NAS or any physical drives you are still in physical possession of your data, that goes out the window if you go 100% cloud which is dangerous. ![]() They can disappear at any time for any reason and then you'll be up shit creek without an actual backup. Honestly, as a main storage solution i'd advise to stay the fuck away from cloud services. Will cloud storage keep getting better and cheaper over time? Is it smart to get on board with it now? Is there anything wrong with sticking to the $100/month Dropbox account and using that for all of my storage? I’ve been using dropbox for years and love the features like selective sync and the ability to share any file from my archives.ĭoes the version history, redundancy and multiple server locations used by dropbox fulfil the 321 requirements? Is there a chance they could lose my data? The other option is more expensive long term, but friendlier to my wallet right now and simplifies the whole process by a lot. How future safe and future proof is my plan, really? Will NAS and 3.5” hard drives still be the norm in 5, 10, 15 years? Will my plan work well enough? Will the DS418 suit my needs, and is it okay to mix and match different NAS hard drive brands? Is there something I’m missing with offsite backup? Is there a better option? If I’m on the road and downloading something from my NAS, would I be limited to the upload speed of my home, where the NAS will be? I’m not sure how online access to my files would work. Here are my questions about running with this option: My total cost would be $3514 for 22TB of safe 321 storage. I could double my cost, buying another DS418 and 2 x 12TB drives, using my spare 4TB plus an additional 6TB for $268 and keep that unit at a friend’s house. I can get a Synology DS418 and 2 x 12TB IronWolf drives for $1623 (all prices are AUD) and combined with 2 of my current drives (1 x 4tb and 1 x 6tb) that’ll get me 22TB of storage. The first obvious option is to buy a NAS and some more hard drives. I’m on the road a lot, so I need to be able to access any file over the internet at relatively fast speeds. So speed isn’t a major concern, but availability is. When I’m working on a video project from dropbox or a hard drive I copy it to my SSD first. I’m currently paying $100/month for dropbox advanced (unlimited storage) until I get a permanent solution sorted.įully backed up safely using the 321 rules I don’t need to keep it all and will spend a few weeks combing through it, but I expect that I’ll need to keep ~10TB. I’ve also got ~18TB of other data which I had stored on the servers at my old workplace, and copied to dropbox before I stopped working there. I need your help and advice!Ĭurrently I’ve got 6.5TB of data on the RAID, which I was backing up (using Carbon Copy Cloner) to the 6TB drive until it filled up. I’m a video editor looking at improving my mess of a storage solution.
